Why Is Citing/Documenting So Important?

When writing a research paper, correctly formatting your paper can be the difference between a job done and a job done well. Correct formatting includes using a specified style for creating citations (see citation definition) for your sources used in your paper. First and foremost, accurately citing your sources gives readers the information they need to easily locate the various sources you use. And just as important, accurate citations give credibility to you, the writer. When sources are properly cited, the author is taking a responsible approach regarding plagiarism. What Are Citation Styles?

When creating your citations you may be asked to use the "APA style" for your guidelines. The "APA style" is a set of specific citation formatting conventions sanctioned by the American Psychological Association. This style shows the APA's version of the way the writer uses punctuation standards, margin depth, line spacing, and heading format as well as how the writer assembles and formats entries.
