Be Safety Conscious

Safety in the workplace is always one of the University’s highest concerns.  Review some simple and straightforward steps we can all take toward deterring crime in the workplace.

  • Keys to desks, cabinets or rooms should not be kept in conspicuous places, such as center desk drawers. Store such keys in less obvious places like a file drawer, pocket folder inside a desk, or even in a box placed in the back of a drawer.

  • Under no circumstances should cash be kept in desk drawers. Purses and valuables should be placed and locked in drawers and not left in plain view. Contact Facilities if your office lacks a locked drawer.

  • Interior office doors should be locked at the conclusion of each workday, and whenever an office will be vacant during normal business hours.

  • Post the number for Security prominently at your desk to report any violations of security, procedures, presence of suspicious persons, or instances of lost, stolen or damaged property.  If you are in a life-threatening situation, call 9-1-1 FIRST before calling campus security.

  • Have car keys in hand and cell phones available before approaching your vehicle. Be aware, look around you and into your vehicle before entering.

  • While crossing streets, please exercise caution when approaching an intersection, and be aware that oncoming traffic will not always look for or yield to pedestrians. Drivers may also be blinded by sunshine – don’t assume that they see you!

Franklin Benefits From Discovery District Safety Measures

The SID (Special Improvement District) was created for the downtown area roughly bounded by I-670, I-71 and Mound and 5th streets.  As part of this new SID, over 60% of the property owners in the area approved a self-imposed tax to fund area upgrades and additional safety measures.  A similar initiative, Capital Crossroads SID, was also formed and has met with great success.

On Thursday, March 1 the first phase of the Discovery SID Safety Plan was implemented when special duty (off-duty) Columbus Division of Police officers began patrolling the Discovery District.  Shortly, the plan will expand to include safety ambassadors and an outreach specialist who will work together with the special duty officers to provide a visible security presence within the boundaries of the Discovery District SID and serve as a reporting mechanism for various safety concerns. Safety ambassadors and special duty officers will patrol the Discovery District Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.  (Hours of service were designated based on 2006 crime statistics).  Although this coverage does not provide for around the clock coverage, SID organizers believe the coverage in place will serve to deter criminal activity even when special duty officers and security ambassadors are not working.  These increased security efforts will simply be in addition to existing security measures already in place on Franklin’s downtown campus.
