Coin History

The Excellence Coin’s genesis grew from two unrelated events that took place simultaneously, and both related to military coins.

The first event took place in April, 2005 when Dr. Christopher Washington, Franklin’s Chief Academic Officer, took part in a U.S. Army Educators Tour — a four-day mock boot camp— in order to gain a closer understanding of the rigors required of GoArmyEd students as they juggle studies with military duties. Related to his participation, Dr. Washington was presented the Base Commander’s General Coin.

The second event was when former Franklin President, Paul J. Otte, was presented with a National Guard coin by a former colleague in the Army National Guard.

Both coin presentations represent inclusion in a special association of high achievement, and Franklin was inspired to create the Franklin Excellence Coin.
