Testing and Alternatives to Classroom Credit

Testing

Our testing services include make-up and out-of-class testing, placement testing and proficiency testing. Exams are proctored in a controlled environment capable of supporting both computer and paper-based tests.

Policies and Procedures

• A government-issued photo ID is required for all testing services
• You must agree to comply with the SLC testing policies as outlined at the beginning of each exam

Placement Exams

• Computer-based placement exams are used to determine the best fit for you as you begin your Franklin classes
• Your Student Services Associates (SSA) will notify you about placement exams that are required before enrollment

Out-of-Class Testing

• Out-of-Class Testing is the most common service provided by the SLC

Distance Education for Non-Franklin Students

• The Student Learning Center provides testing services to students who attend other institutions
• Computer/Internet (via PrepBlast) and/or paper-based examinations
• $25 per exam

Alternatives to Classroom Credit

Proficiency Exams

Students who have gained knowledge through on-the-job training, reading, and experiences may demonstrate proficiency in those areas through CLEP and FUPE exams. Grading and processing may take up to 15 business days. Therefore, students are encouraged to complete exams prior to the submission of their graduation application. Students must register, schedule, and pay for these exams through the SLC Web site.

CLEP

• College Level Examination Program (CLEP): The nationwide CLEP program provides standardized test that award students college credit
• All CLEP tests are computer-based, multiple-choice exams that are 90 minutes long
• Score reports are available immediately
• $85 per exam
• CLEP examinations offered at Franklin University

FUPE

• Franklin University Proficiency Examination (FUPE): These exams are created by Franklin University faculty and are specific to Franklin courses
• FUPE credit may not transfer to other institutions
• FUPE exams are either paper- or computer-based
• Study guides are available on the SLC Web site
• $40 per credit hour

Portfolio Credit Program

• The Portfolio Credit Program is one way to demonstrate college level learning through a specially structured notebook containing a request for credit for a specific Franklin University course.
