Off-Campus Housing

Because Franklin University primarily serves working adults, there is no on-campus housing available. It is your responsibility to find permanent housing accommodations. International Student Services (ISS) can offer you information and resources, such as a list of apartments within walking distance to the Main Campus.

Off-Campus Temporary Housing

The American Homestay Program is designed to assist new international students upon arrival to the United States and give students a place to stay while they look for permanent housing. This program provides a unique opportunity for a student to learn about the American way of life, as American families have volunteered to take an international student into their home for one to three days. There is no cost to the student and the family is not reimbursed for this hospitality service.
If you are interested in the American Homestay Program, you will need to fill out an application.

American Culture

This list of helpful hints about Americans is designed to prepare you for your stay in the United States.

A firm handshake is proper when greeting both men and women.
Americans are informal and quickly use first names.
Americans rarely speak a language other than English.
Punctuality is very important. Make every effort to be on time.
Your words are taken literally. If you refuse food the first time it is offered, it may not be offered again. Americans may not know that your refusal is politeness.
Direct eye contact gives an indication of honesty, not aggression.
When faced with being polite or honest, it is usually better to be polite.
Americans hold high standards for cleanliness and personal hygiene.
Questions are okay. If you do not understand something, ask someone to explain.
Good topics for conversation include the weather, family, sports, business, and/or education.
