Why did you choose Franklin University?
I wanted an education that would fit around my busy work schedule.

Why did you decide to return to college
I went back to school to update my skills as they apply to my job in law enforcement – plus I believe in lifelong learning. Years ago, I’d earned my associate’s degree in Visual Communications and had a career in advertising. But when the agency I worked for closed, I applied to law enforcement agencies to be a composite sketch artist. That skill eventually evolved into a role as Public Information Officer for a patrol post, and I’ve made law enforcement my second career.

What kind of commitments did you have in addition to school?
My four boys kept me very busy; one in college, one in high school, one in middle school and one in elementary school. We studied together, but also I spent a lot of time playing chauffeur to football, basketball, track and soccer events you name it, they did it! And I was right there with them. We worked together to get everything done that we needed to do.

How did you feel about being an adult student?
It was great. Setting an example for my sons was especially rewarding. “Do as I do” carries a lot more weight than “Do as I say.” Setting goals and creating a system of discipline to meet them were things they saw me do, and they also saw that I got upset if I didn’t get an “A.” I wanted them to have that same high standard for their own achievements.

Any thoughts about Franklin’s learning process?
In both the face-to-face and online classes, I was impressed with the information provided, because it was so up-to-date. I don’t know what I was expecting, but that made me really pay attention. Plus, I was surprised at how accessible and receptive the instructors were… email, phone, Bulletin Board: I could talk to professors and class members as often as I needed. For me, that was a huge component of Franklin’s strength.

What was your favorite part?
The Capstone was a real benefit. It brought together all the courses and I got a lot out of seeing how they all gelled together. I also liked working on projects with students who contributed from so many different perspective on: age, jobs, titles, experiences, managers, subordinates, natural leaders. It was a real eye-opener for me.

What was your overall experience with Franklin?
Excellent! Even though more education isn’t necessary for me to move up in law enforcement, I got so much value from what I learnedand the whole learning process itselfthat my next step is to get my MBA at Franklin.

Any words of advice for future Franklin students?
Start! The important thing is to not make excuses. Once you get used to making learning part of your schedule and your life, you’ll find the rewards are endless.
