Spotlight On Jessica Cooper

Jessica J. Cooper
Staff Accountant
Kennedy, Cottrell & Associates
Accounting Student

I was a single mom who was interested in going back to college when a friend told me about Franklin University. I had attended a traditional college, but couldn’t take classes during the day, hold a job and care for my son. Franklin’s schedule of evening classes once a week sounded great to me.

I started off as a PR major, but when I came to Franklin my first classes were in basic finance and accounting. The faculty was great and they really got me interested in the field of accounting. They showed me how accounting relates to a business practices, and to running a business as a whole.

I’ve had to overcome some obstacles while I was working on my degree. I got married and got pregnant with my daughter. Of course I was overjoyed – but I was also incredibly sick during most of my pregnancy. I would sign up for classes, and then feel too bad to complete them. Through it all, the Franklin faculty and staff were incredibly supportive. They were there for me when I was finally able to come back – and reminded me to stick to it and stay focused.

The Franklin faculty also helped me get an internship that eventually led to the job I currently have. I’ve gotten more and more accounting responsibilities in my job, and now I know that this is the field I want to build a career in. My education, and the contacts I’ve made at Franklin, are helping me do just that.
