I’ve made a career of being a firefighter. Each day is a surprise and a challenge – and I enjoy the bond created with my co-workers. Together we put our lives on the line. Because of this, established trust and clear communication are critical components of my job.

A few years ago, I decided to earn my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in order to refine my communication and leadership skills. I chose Franklin because of the team approach to learning, the curriculum focused on life experiences and the flexible schedule.

Because I’d already earned an associate’s degree in Fire Science and another in Safety Program Management while in the Air Force Reserve Guard, I was confident I could handle the school work. And because my organization places a high value on lifelong learning, my superiors were very supportive of my choice to pursue further education at Franklin.

Being enrolled in Franklin’s Joint Programs of Study, I completed my bachelor’s degree in a few months, then graduated shortly after with my MBA. The Program allowed me to earn both degrees in fewer hours because several undergraduate courses are taught at the graduate level.

As a student in the Organizational Leadership Major, I learned to think long-term – to look beyond probabilities and explore possibilities. I also learned a tremendous number of things that allowed me to help my co-workers achieve their goals through enhanced communication skills and improved organization.

While earning my degree, I worked a 24-hour shift every third day, but I still had time for coursework as well as time with my wife, Kim, and daughters, Molly, Meredith and Marah. I enjoyed being able to support their individual pursuits, such as ballet and soccer.

My Franklin education was rewarding and empowering, and because of my employer’s support, the journey was stress-free. Franklin’s approach to adult education was innovative and applicable to the real world, and the curriculum was taught by faculty members who are passionate about their subjects.

I would encourage anyone considering lifelong learning to look at Franklin University.
