Fire Officer I

This course is designed to provide firefighters with the knowledge and skills necessary to become officers. The Fire Officer I course also helps current officers develop their skills and ensure their qualifications to meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Either way, you will enhance your awareness of yourself and others, as well as learn about team dynamics, interpersonal relationships, laws, regulations, and community involvement.  Students that complete this course who also enroll at Franklin University in the Public Safety Management and Leadership program can get 4 credit hours for successful completion of the course.

Fire Officer II

Designed to build on the theory and practice taught in Fire Officer I, the course gives firefighters the knowledge and skills necessary to advance to the level and role of Fire Officer II. The 12-week online course also provides a way for current officers to enhance their leadership and management skills as they conduct fire officer roles and responsibilities. Participants will develop their leadership capabilities, apply critical concepts in team dynamics and interpersonal relationships, increase their understanding of pertinent laws, regulations, and improve their ability to build community involvement.  Students that complete this course who also enroll at Franklin University in the Public Safety Management and Leadership program can get 4 credit hours for successful completion of the course.

Global Fluency Training

The Need 

Today’s global economy and society demands that all employees are able to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds in order to build relationships with colleagues, clients, organizations, and governments. The Solution

The Columbus Council on World Affairs offers a training session to develop cross-cultural competency for professionals and educators.  The sessions combine internationally recognized resources with hands on simulation activities in order to understand how culture affects the work place and to develop skills to navigate a diverse global work environment.

Six Sigma Black Belt Certification

This twelve-week blended certification program provides participants with the skills to identify projects and lead a Six Sigma Black Belt process improvement project team. Participants will learn the Six Sigma DMAIC methodology, as well as the role of a Black Belt project leader. 

Based on the IASSC body of knowledge, participants in the course will learn to:

  • Work within an organizational structure and guide leaders in improvement opportunity identification and project selection.
  • Define project including goal identification and quantification of financial savings
  • Understand and describe current state process
  • Use statistical techniques to identify root cause
  • Lead team through brainstorming and implementation of project solutions

Course Structure:

  • 4-week on-line coursework to be completed prior to classroom training start date
  • 8-week classroom and online coursework including homework assignments

Certification Requirements:

  • Completion of Black Belt course work
  • Passing grade of 70 or higher on certification examination
  • Completion and approval of 1 Black Belt project

Certification is not guaranteed. Participants will need to meet project completion and testing criteria in order to be awarded certification. Those participants who complete the course but do not compete the project and testing requirements will receive a certificate of completion.
