Off-Campus Housing for International Students

Find permanent housing

Because Franklin University primarily serves working adults, there is no on-campus housing available. It is your responsibility to find permanent housing accommodations. International Student Services (ISS) can offer you information and resources, such as a list of apartments within walking distance to the Main Campus.

Franklin University has campus locations in and around the city of Columbus, Ohio. However, Franklin does not have on-campus student housing or dorms because most of our students are adults.

Renting an apartment

You will be responsible for renting an apartment off campus, and many off-campus housing options are available to you. Check out apartments in the Columbus area with these helpful resources:

Temporary housing with a host family

We strongly suggest that you research housing options and secure your apartment lease prior to your arrival in the U.S.

If this is not possible, you may participate in the American Homestay Program, which allows you to stay with an American host family for 1-3 days while you find permanent housing. It's a great opportunity to meet Americans and learn more about the American way of life.

Important leasing terms

The following rental definitions will help you communicate with housing representatives:

Lease: A legally binding document that usually covers a one-year period. Make sure you read the entire document and sign it only if you agree with the listed conditions.

Rent: Housing costs that are usually due once a month on a specified date. Late payments may result in a penalty, costing you additional money.

Security Deposit: Pre-payment of funds to cover possible damages that may occur while you are living in an apartment. If you leave the apartment in good condition, your security deposit will be returned when you move out.

Utilities: Electricity, gas, and water are some examples of utilities that may or may not be covered in your rent. Your lease will state utilities for which you are financially responsible.

Landlord or Rental Office: Person or office responsible for maintaining the building and making repairs within a reasonable period of time.

Renter’s Insurance: Insurance that covers all of your personal belongings in the event of fire or theft. The landlord’s insurance does not cover your personal property.

Roommate: A person who shares a living area with you and helps pay the rental expenses.
