RefWorks Import/Export Instructions by Database

ACM Digital Library
To export citations:
- Click on the citation you are interested in to display the full citation.
- Click BibTex where Display formats: is indicated.
- Copy and paste the results into a .txt file.
- Do this with each citation you want.
To import citations into RefWorks:
- Open Refworks from the "databases by name" page and log in.
- Choose References, Import on the toolbar.
- Select BibTex as the Import Filter/Data Source and ACM Digital Library as the Database.
- Choose Import Data from the following Text File and browse for your saved text file.
- Click Import.
ACS Publications
- Perform your search. Check the select citation box next to the records you wish to export.
- Click the Download selected citations button.
- Select RefWorks from the drop down menu and click download.
- Click Export to RefWorks.
- RefWorks will open and you will be prompted to log in. After you log in, your selected citation will automatically be imported.

- After you complete your search, check the boxes to the left of the records you would like to export.
- Click Exporting/Citing from the navigation menu at the top of the page.
- Make sure the correct records are selected and that RefWork's Direct Export Tool is selected. Click the Export button.
- RefWorks will open in a new window and the citation will be uploaded when you log in.

Users with a personal ebrary account can directly import into RefWorks. You must be logged in for the direct import to work.
- Click My Settings from the ebrary home page.
- Check box for Show Refworks Buttons and click Set Preferences to save.
- After you perform your search, click on Quick View for any title you would like to import to RefWorks.
- Once the book opens, select RefWorks under InfoTools. RefWorks will open after you log in, the citation information will automatically be imported from ebrary.
EBSCOhost
To export citations:
- Mark the citations you wish to save by checking the Add link on the right side of each citation.
- Click the Folder has Items link above the citation list.
- This will display the list of citations you have saved. Click Export
- Make sure the radio button Direct Export to RefWorks is selected.
- Click the Save button on the left.
- You will be prompted to login to RefWorks if you have not done so already
- Once logged in, records will be imported automatically

Exporting References from the Electronic Journal Center
- At the Search Results page, click on the Title of the article you want to export into RefWorks. Note: Electronic Journal Center citations have to be exported one at a time.
- To the right of the article you will see a box with the image of the cover of the journal that the article is located in. In the drop down menu underneath the image, select RefWorks from the format/export options and click Go.
- RefWorks will open and you will be prompted to log in. After you log in your selected citation will automatically be imported.

- After performing your search in the Franklin University Library Basic Search screen, click on the Extended Display button near the top of the page.
- Check the boxes next to the records you would like to import. Click on Saved Marked Records button at the top and bottom of the page.
- Click on the View Saved button.
- Click the button to Export Saved records.
- Choose the Full Display radio button. Enter your e-mail address and leave the subject as INNOPAC Export. Click SUBMIT.
- After you receive the record through INNOPAC Export e-mail, Copy and paste the contents of that e-mail into a Word Pad document.
- Open Word Pad. Copy and paste the record into Word Pad by pressing Ctrl + V.
- Save the file as a Text Document.
Open your RefWorks account. Then:
- References and choose Import.
- Make sure that the Import Data/Filter source says: Franklin University.
- Click Browse and locate the document you just saved in Word Pad.
- When you have completed all of the required entries, click Import. This item will be added to your database and may be used to create a bibliography/reference document.

- RefWorks will open in a new window. After you log in, your citation will automatically be imported.

Exporting References from a ISI Web of Science Database
- Mark the records you want to import by checking the Web of Science boxes next to each reference you want to export.
- Click the Submit Marks button, then click the view marked lists link.
- The page will show that you have marked references. Click the View marked records button.
- The Output Options window will appear. Make sure there the following fields are checked to be included in the output: author, cited references, title (article), source (includes the journal title, date, volume, issue and pagination), keywords, and abstract. Accept the default setting, Field Tagged.
- Then click the SAVE TO FILE button. The Processing Records window will appear.
- Click the SAVE button.
- The File Download window will appear. Note the name of the file you are downloading.
- Click the Save button.
The Save As window will open.
- Note the name of the file you are saving. Note where you are saving the file. Click Save.
- The Download Complete window will open and you will get a Download Complete confirmation.
- Note the name of the file you downloaded.
- Click Close.
Importing References into RefWorks
- Enter your login name and password and click the Login button.
- Click References in the top menu.
- Then click Import in the drop-down menu.
- Click the down arrow in the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box and select the ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) import filter. Your screen will refresh.
- Click the down arrow in the Database drop-down box and select the ISI database you have been using.
- Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File textbox.
- In the Choose File window: Click on your saved file and click Open.
- The RefWorks Import page will open and confirm that your record has been imported.

- After you complete your search, mark the records you want to import by clicking the check boxes next to each reference.
- Click the Export Bibliographic References icon. It is the icon that looks like an open book located next to the Save icon at the top of the page.
- A new screen will appear that gives you the option to export all records or just the ones you selected. Click the red Export button to continue.
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks, a new window with RefWorks will appear and you will need to log in.
- Once you are logged in, your citations will automatically be imported from LexisNexis. You will have the option to move them to another folder if desired.

Manually Importing Records
To view these instructions with screen shots, view Quick Reference Card 3 or follow the instructions below:
- From RefWorks, select References from the toolbar.
- Choose Add New Reference from the drop down menu.
- From View Required Fields, select APA style.
- Choose a destination folder for your new reference.
- Under Ref Type indicated what you are citing (book, journal article, Web page, etc).
- Add all bibliographic information in the fields marked with an asterisk *.
- Click Save Reference.

Exporting References from an OhioLINK Database
- After you submit your search strategy, the Results List of your search will display.
- Move through the pages of your search results checking the store box of the references you want to export.
- Then click the Stored Records button
- The Stored Records window will appear.
- Click the Export Records link. The Export Options window will appear.
- Select Direct export to RefWorks
- Accept the default setting, Automatically import into bibliographic manager program
- Then click Export Now button.
Importing References from an OhioLINK Database into RefWorks
- The RefWorks Login Center page will open
- Enter your login name & password.
- Click the Login button. The RefWorks Import page will open
- RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished.
- Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.
- RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.
