Assistant Director, Safety & Security

Franklin University has a full-time opening available for an Assistant Director, Safety & Security.  Reporting to the Vice President, Campus Services, this individual will provide leadership and management for all safety and physical security initiatives impacting Franklin University’s assets to include people, real property and reputation.

Select duties include managing the activities of safety officers; managing the relationship, deployment and activities of special duty police officers and providing Safety & Security special event management.

The selected individual will serve as a liaison with local, state and federal law enforcement officials and local, county, state and federal government officials on campus safety/security and other regulatory matters and will manage/conduct investigations on behalf of the university.  

Other duties include managing all aspects of access control, video surveillance and intrusion detection systems, managing the early warning and anonymous reporting systems for the university, recommending/managing the development and implementation of policies and procedures, managing the assessment and implementation of security technology upgrades and identifying and managing training initiatives in addition to managing and maintaining the departmental webpage to ensure appropriate content and compliance, attending professional development opportunities and managing a team.

The Assistant Director will sit on various university committees as a subject matter expert and will serve as an advisor on student code of conduct and employee-related matters.  

This position is subject to being on-call and will be expected to work variable hours outside of normal business hours as situations dictate.

We seek someone with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 5 years in a law enforcement or leadership role with a private/corporate security firm.  A minimum of 3 years of previous supervisory experience within law enforcement or private/corporate security is also required.  The selected individual must be able to stand and walk as part of the normal course of duties, have knowledge of physical security practices and basic access control and video surveillance practices and must have a valid Ohio driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle report at the time of hire and maintain both throughout length of employment as this position may involve driving a University vehicle.  In addition, the Assistant Director must have demonstrated ability to work well in a high stress environment, possess a State of Ohio CCW permit or law enforcement equivalent and become OPOTA certified within 6 months of employment if not already certified.

Working knowledge of the Higher Education Opportunity Act/CLERY Act, basic life safety (fire system) knowledge and understanding of private university culture would all be pluses in this position.
