Joanna Williamson, PhD

Profile

Dr. Williamson is the Chair of the Department of Management & Marketing and Chair of the M.S. in Marketing Communication Program in the Ross College of Business. She has more than 30 years of marketing and marketing communication experience in the corporate, non-profit, and entrepreneurial sectors. After early positions in journalism and public relations, she began her marketing career in product management with The Procter & Gamble Co. She then moved into financial services marketing, rising to the position of Senior Vice President of Marketing for the largest retail affiliate of the Cleveland-based National City Corporation, where she managed the retail, corporate, trust, market research, advertising, public relations, telemarketing, sales support, product management, and service quality departments. Dr. Williamson has been a marketing vice president for the credit card and national lending divisions of Bank One Corporation; vice president of marketing and resource development for one of the top two national United Way offices; and President and CEO of a United Way-funded agency. As an entrepreneur, Dr. Williamson founded a small business that provided comprehensive strategic marketing services to individuals and organizations in a wide variety of industries and endeavors. Dr. Williamson has been a regularly-requested speaker and instructor at local, regional, and national conferences, professional schools, companies, events, and spiritual gatherings. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in marketing from The Ohio State University, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Capital University Law School, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in strategic marketing communication from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has received awards and accolades for her service on numerous community-centered boards and committees. Dr. Williamson transitioned into academia to pursue her passion for teaching and learning. Before assuming her current roles at Franklin University, Dr. Williamson held the positions of Executive-in-Residence and Visiting Assistant Professor of Marketing in the College of Business at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Dr. Williamson is a Columbus native. She is the mother of a 16-year-old son.
