Franklin and Urbana Universities Host Commencement for Pilot Group of ESL Immersion Graduates

Franklin and Urbana Universities hosted a commencement ceremony on Monday, Dec. 12, celebrating the completion of the two universities’ pilot group of Blue Horizon Business and Culture ESL Immersion Program students.  The 24 students, from the National Technological Institute at Misantla (ITSM) just completed the unique immersion program, which included engagement with local business and industry. The distinctive program was designed to provide ITSM students in STEM fields with intensive language study along with field visits that include lectures with science, business, engineering, manufacturing and technology experts. These site visits are then developed into business-focused project-based classroom assignments, constructed as hands-on opportunities for students to apply their newly acquired language and professional skills.

Speaking at the commencement ceremony, were:

•           Eduardo Salvador Rios Ramos, graduating student speaker

The graduating students received certificates of completion followed by a celebratory luncheon with their program faculty and representatives from both universities. Also in attendance at the celebration were Camilo Grau, Head of State of Veracruz TecNM Legal Affairs, and Jorge Sanchez Cataño, Deputy Consul at Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis, International Affairs

This pilot group of ITSM students were able to participate in this program through the signing of a formal partnership agreement with the Veracruz Directorate of Technology Education (DET) of Veracruz, Mexico. Through partnerships such as this, Franklin University, Urbana University and DET can fulfill their altruistic responsibility to train a new workforce on both sides of the border to meet growing demands in energy, telecommunications, technological innovation and other areas.  (For more on this partnership agreement, visit the partnership announcement at http://bit.ly/2hBSEUD)

This group of students spent their program time residing on the campus of Urbana University (a division of Franklin). Through this residential approach, students receive the benefit of curriculum expertise combined with traditional university campus life that produces the opportunity for students to interact with Urbana’s other international students living on campus. Through these various program activities and residential experiences, students receive a true cultural and linguistic immersion experience.
