Student-selected award recognizes educators who inspire learning, career growth and lifelong success

As Franklin University celebrated its 182nd Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the University is also recognizing two exceptional educators whose commitment to student success has made a lasting impact on graduates' academic and professional journeys.

This trimester's recipients of the prestigious Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award are Dr. Gayle DeGennaro, graduate faculty award recipient, and Bryan Buoni, undergraduate faculty award recipient.

Selected directly by graduating students, the Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award honors faculty members who have most significantly influenced learners through exceptional teaching, mentorship and real-world application of knowledge. The recognition reflects Franklin University's commitment to career-connected education, where academic excellence is strengthened by faculty who bring extensive professional expertise into the classroom.

Graduate Bailey Award Recipient: Dr. Gayle DeGennaro

For nearly three decades, Dr. Gayle DeGennaro has helped students develop the analytical and technical skills needed to thrive in today's data-driven workplace. As chair of Franklin's undergraduate information systems program, she teaches graduate-level courses in database management and systems analysis and design while also serving as a faculty advisor for Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) students.

Her teaching philosophy centers on collaborative learning, practical problem-solving and building student confidence in working with data and technology. During her 29-year tenure at Franklin, Dr. DeGennaro has collaborated across nearly every area of the University, providing students with valuable insight into how technology, business operations and organizational strategy intersect.

In addition to her academic leadership, Dr. DeGennaro has built an accomplished career in information technology, managing enterprise data systems, business software and complex systems integrations. She holds an MBA from Capital University and a DBA from Franklin University and is currently pursuing a master's degree in analytics.

Undergraduate Bailey Award Recipient: Bryan Buoni

A Franklin instructor for 19 years, Bryan Buoni is recognized for his ability to connect psychology, human behavior and workplace success in meaningful and practical ways.

Currently serving as Executive Director of Human Resources for Dublin City Schools, Buoni brings extensive leadership experience in human resources, organizational development and conflict resolution to the classroom. His courses help students understand the human dynamics that drive effective leadership, teamwork and organizational performance.

Known for his mentorship of adult learners, Buoni integrates real-world behavioral insights and workforce applications into his teaching, helping students see the direct connection between psychological principles and professional success. His approach reflects Franklin University's mission of preparing learners not only to earn credentials, but to advance in their careers and make meaningful contributions within their organizations.

A Student-Driven Recognition of Teaching Excellence

The Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award is one of Franklin University's highest faculty honors because it is determined entirely by graduating students. Each trimester, graduates nominate one undergraduate and one graduate faculty member who had the greatest impact on their educational experience.

More than 100 undergraduate and graduate faculty members are typically nominated each trimester, underscoring the strong connections Franklin students build with instructors throughout their academic journey. The faculty members receiving the highest number of nominations earn this distinguished recognition.

The award celebrates educators who challenge students intellectually, inspire personal and professional growth, and help learners connect classroom knowledge to real-world goals and career outcomes.
