BIO 251 - General Anatomy & Physiology I (4 Credit Hours)

This course is the first of a two semester sequence that explores the structure and function of the human body. During this course, students will study standard terminology, the chemical basis of life, and the structure and function of cells, tissues, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, and special sensory organs. Laboratory studies will involve the application of lecture materials through the use of microscopy, dissection, and examination of anatomical models.

BIO 252 - General Anatomy & Physiology II (4 Credit Hours)

This course is the second of a two semester sequence that explores the structure and function of the human body. During this course, students will study the structure and function of the endocrine system, cardiovascular system (blood, heart, and blood vessels), lymphatic system (fluid return and immunity), respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, and reproductive system (male and female); development; and, genetics and inheritance.

BIO 261 - Microbiology for Health Professionals (2 Credit Hours)

This course explores the fundamental aspects of microbiology with an emphasis on those microorganisms that cause human disease. Topics include the structure and growth requirements of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, the methods used to control microorganisms, microbial genetics, methods microorganisms use to cause human disease, the human immune response, and microbial diseases of the body. Students will also be introduced to sterile technique and use of the compound microscope.

BIO 330 - Cell Biology (3 Credit Hours)

A study of the cell, its membrane, organelles, and the biochemical and energy producing processes that occur within it. The morphological differences of cell populations will be considered, including diseases that result from abnormal morphological changes. BIO 406 - Genetics (4 Credit Hours)

This course provides an in-depth study of the principles of heredity and genetic variation across biological systems. Topics include Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, molecular genetics, gene expression and regulation, population genetics, and the role of genetics in evolution. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between genotype and phenotype and the application of genetic principles to human health, agriculture, and biotechnology. Students develop skills in scientific reasoning, data analysis, and problem-solving as they interpret genetic information and apply quantitative and conceptual models to biological questions. The laboratory component reinforces lecture concepts through hands-on investigation of genetic processes, including classical and molecular techniques. Students engage in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of genetic data while developing proficiency in scientific communication and adhering to appropriate laboratory safety practices.

BIO 420 - Microbiology (4 Credit Hours)

This course provides an in-depth study of microorganisms and their roles in natural and applied systems. Topics include the diversity, structure, physiology, and genetics of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and select microfauna. Emphasis is placed on microbial metabolism, growth, and interactions, as well as the ecological, industrial, and medical significance of microorganisms. Students examine the roles of microorganisms in human health and disease, environmental processes, and biotechnology applications. The course also explores microbial identification, classification, and the impact of microorganisms in contemporary scientific and societal contexts. The laboratory component reinforces lecture concepts through hands-on investigation of microbial systems, including aseptic technique, culturing, microscopy, and biochemical and molecular methods of identification. Students develop skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication while adhering to appropriate laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
