Completing an Assignment Last Minute? Pause, Breathe and Reflect

Let’s face it: Most students are busy. Between school, caring for loved ones, work and various other life responsibilities, you may find yourself short on time and energy as you sit down to complete an assignment quickly coming due. The question that swiftly enters your mind is:

What do I do?

This is a critical point to take three actions:  Pause, Breathe and Reflect:

  • Pause: What can you do right now to best impact the situation? Can you complete part of the assignment to the best of your ability? If not, should you reach out to your instructor to determine available options?
  • Breathe: Stop and take a deep breath. This will assist with making a reasoned decision regarding the assignment. The calmer you are, the less difficult the decision-making process.
  • Reflect: Consider the pros and cons of each decision. Also, consider what outcomes you are seeking from the decision. Both considerations will tremendously assist your overall decision-making process.

What NOT To Do

Some students in this situation may commit academic misconduct to complete the assignment.  The stress of the situation may cause them to conclude this is the only feasible decision. This is never the case. Additional options always exist. Again, reflect on your desired outcome and determine the best way to achieve that outcome.

Remember: One small decision can have a lasting impact on your entire Franklin experience!
