Important GI Bill Update: New Monthly Enrollment Verification Requirement

November 8, 2021 | By Breanna Mackley
Military & Veterans

Beginning the Spring 2022 term, those using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits at Franklin University and other Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) will be required to verify their enrollment at the end of each month. Failure to verify for two consecutive months will impact your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) and/or kicker payments.

This is part of a phased approach and has already been rolled out to Post 9/11 GI Bill students attending Non-College Degree (NCD) facilities. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is encouraging students to sign up for text message verification. This will provide students with a convenient and straightforward verification option and ensure they receive uninterrupted MHA and/or kicker payments. After Friday, Dec. 17, all impacted students with a US mobile phone number on file will receive an opt-in text as their next enrollment period approaches. Note: Students who do not have a US mobile phone number on file with VA cannot use text verification. Instead, they will be automatically enrolled in the email verification.
  • In tandem with these verification requirements for students, the VA implemented a two-certification requirement effective Sunday, Aug. 1. This means your Franklin School Certifying Officials (SCO) are now required to submit an additional certification of enrollment after the course add/drop period.

Further information will be sent directly to you from the VA. You may also contact the VA directly at 888.442.4551 if you have any questions.
