Have you been thinking about applying for an internship to gain experience in your field? Many companies have reduced or even eliminated internships for the foreseeable future. Those who have kept them are creating new work from home internships or even reducing the timeframe, opting to create micro-internships or badging opportunities instead. That is why these internship opportunities are so competitive. Before you start applying for positions, review the necessary steps below.

  1. Revise your resume and get it ready to apply for internships within your desired field; the Center for Career Development is happy to assist with this step.
  2. Contact your academic advisor to obtain a copy of the Franklin internship manual and let them know you are seeking an internship.
  3. Start applying for internships that interest you.
  4. Once you have obtained an internship, start completing the internship manual and work closely with your faculty member to ensure all steps are complete to receive credit.
  5. Once approved and accepted, complete your internship. Be sure to check in regularly with your faculty member to ensure you are on track.

Remember that if you're looking for an internship, often they are unpaid. If an unpaid internship isn't possible, it might be time to consider an entry-level position in your area of study. In both cases, the internship and entry-level position will gain you valuable experience that will pay off in the future.
