Roll Call: Your Guide to Attendance at Franklin U
Whether you take courses online or in-person, attendance matters and plays a factor in your success. Here is your guide to all things attendance at Franklin University.
Attendance in Face-to-Face courses
The way to get counted as present for a face-to-face course goes beyond simply showing up during your course session. You must also engage in the learning activities and assignments of the course and be present at least 85% of the session time. When you do not show up or choose not to participate in the course, this counts as an absence.
Attendance in Online courses
Yes, even with online courses, attendance matters! You are considered present for your course for the week (Monday through Sunday) when there is evidence that you participated in the course during that time. This means responding to the class discussion posts, attending meet sessions, and turning in assignments on time! The only way your instructor knows you are present in the course is if you are doing the assignments each week.
How many absences can I accumulate?
We get it – you will encounter work, life, or family events that will take your attention away from your course and place it elsewhere. The most important thing is to communicate with your instructor when you are going to be absent from your course. Communication is the only way your instructor will know that your child is sick, and you need an extension on your assignment.
For 6-week classes, you are allowed one absence, and for 12-week classes, you can have two absences.
What are Z-Grades?
When you receive more than one absence in a 6-week course or more than two absences in a 12-week course, the Registrar automatically withdraws you from the course. This results in a Z-grade, which is a grade based on non-attendance. A Z-grade is a failing grade, like an F, that affects your GPA and potentially your financial aid award.
Do your best to avoid Z-grades by attending your classes. Remember, all classes open ten days before their set start date to allow you to log in early and get started.
A word of caution …
Pay attention to your instructor’s specific policy on attendance. Read their notes and ask questions if you are unclear about their views on attendance. Remember, your presence matters at Franklin University!
