Unusual Circumstances

University Mission on Unusual Circumstances

Franklin University understands that unusual circumstances may justify a review by an aid administrator to determine if an adjustment is necessary to override a student’s financial aid dependency status.

Eligible Circumstances

Some examples of unusual circumstances are listed below, but are not inclusive because unusual circumstances can be different for every student and treated on a case by case basis:

  • Parental abandonment
  • Unsafe or abusive home environment
  • Parental whereabouts are unknown
  • Parental incarceration
  • Refugee or asylee status
  • Human trafficking

The following conditions DO NOT qualify for an unusual circumstance review;

  • You demonstrate total student self-sufficiency (live on your own, pay your own bills).
  • Your parents are unwilling or unable to provide financial assistance for college.
  • Your parents refuse to provide information or sign the FAFSA.
  • Your parents no longer claim you as a tax dependent.

If you are unsure if your circumstances would qualify, or if you would like to talk to a Student Financial Services representative regarding your individual situation, please contact our office at sfs@franklin.edu.
