GRPH210 - Fundamentals of Graphic Design

Description:
In this course students will explore the fundamental principles and creative process of graphic design. An emphasis is placed on visual problem solving skills and the creative and aesthetic aspects of traditional graphic design. The course also explores the implications of traditional graphic design in a digital format. NOTE: This is a technology course, in a technology program, and it requires the purchase of software that may be used in subsequent courses as well as being suitable for commercial work beyond completion of degree studies. For specific software requirements, consult the course syllabus.

Outcomes:

  • Create a layout demonstrating the principles and elements of graphic design
  • Apply effective typography and color in design
  • Present the reasoning behind decisions made for layouts
  • Describe production standards and web standards in a design

Required Text(s):

Required Materials

This course uses Digital Course Packets (DCP) instead of textbooks. Digital course packets combine course-related materials into a single access point, including journal articles, e-books, websites, links, images, and videos. These DCPs replace traditional textbooks to help ensure open access to various materials while keeping the cost to a minimum and are free for students. The content is curated by the course instructors to ensure that the content is relevant and appropriate for their students.

  • Go to the APA Citation Style Guide. for assistance with APA formatting.
  • Important Note: Web Development students should retain all of the above resources since they are used for review in the capstone course.

Software

  • Photo editing software (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Paint Shop Pro).
  • FTP or similar web design/file transfer software is needed for posting assignments to the course webserver.

Other Materials

  • Design supplies, including:

    • Sketch Pad (larger than 8.5"x11")
    • Tracing paper or parchment paper
    • 3-5 Sharpies (Black) — various widths
    • Pencils
    • X-acto knife (and extra blades)
    • Scissors
    • Masking Tape
    • Metal Ruler
    • Rubber Cement or Spray Mount (Super 77)
    • Rubber Cement Pick-Up (if using Rubber Cement)
    • Black and white construction paper (varies, approx. 5 sheets)
    • Cutting surface (self-healing matte, chipboard, etc.)
    • Colored pencils

Equipment

  • Headset - It is required that students purchase a headset (headphones with a microphone) and have access to a computer with a sound card in order to fully participate in class meetings
  • Scanner - Access to a computer with a scanner for use in scanning design work.
