PUBH201 - Introduction to Public Health

Description:
This course provides a basic introduction to public health concepts and practice by examining the philosophy, purpose, history, organization, functions, tools, activities and results of public health practice at the national, state, and community levels. The course also examines public health occupations and careers. Case studies and a variety of practice-related exercises serve as a basis for learner participation in practical public health problem-solving simulations.

Outcomes:

  • Explain the history and philosophy of public health systems and concepts
  • Describe the role of law and government in promoting and protecting the health of the public
  • Identify the fundamental characteristics and organizational structures of national, regional, and local health systems
  • Identify the various professions that contribute to carrying out public health's core functions and essential services
  • Apply processes, approaches, and interventions used in addressing population health issues
  • Analyze the key political, ethical, and economic challenges facing public health workers
