3rd Annual Learning Showcase Winners Announced

Columbus, OH —

On Friday, Oct. 7, Franklin University, one of the leading educators of working adults in central Ohio, hosted its third annual Learning Showcase: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success. Five groups of winners were selected in the unique poster event, hosted in partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Columbus State Community College and the Columbus College of Art & Design, honored the innovative work of students, faculty, nonprofit, government and business partners both in the United States and abroad.

Submissions included a wide array of concepts, research at all levels of progression, programs, evaluations and ventures that reflected achievements and thought leadership. Presentations were submitted from various local, state, national and international organizations, including from Kenya, Africa.

Winners were selected using Franklin University’s five core value categories: Integrity, Respect, Opportunity, Learning and Excellence.

Integrity Core Value Learning Showcase Award: Basing decisions and actions on the highest moral standards and ethical ideals.
Winners: Dr. Martina Peng; Dr. James Pierson; and students Susanna Beachy, Raye Lynne Gerber and Jessica Oberle
Presentation: “Making Changes to the Local Community - VITA Program” “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program – Prepare Taxes and Make a Difference”

Respect Core Value Showcase Award: Treating others fairly and with dignity.
Winners: Stonewall Columbus – Kathy Crowe

Opportunity Core Value Showcase Award: Encouraging growth and ongoing professional development along the path to success.
Winners: Columbus Scholar House – Sarah French
Presentation: “Columbus Scholar House: Innovative Housing for Student Parents”

Learning Core Value Showcase Award: Actively supporting lifelong discovery and the exploration of knowledge.
Winners: Dr. Nimet Alpay, Dr. Natalya Koehler and Carolyn LeVally
Presentation: “Results of a Successful Redesign of an Introductory Statistics Course: Improved Student Performance, Retention, and Course satisfaction”

Excellence Core Value Showcase Award: Pursuing exceptional results with determination, pride, and passion.
Winners: Zachary O’Driscoll (Capital Law Student)
Presentation: "The Mascot Manifesto: Challenging the Constitutionality of the Lanham Act in a Heightened Era of Political Correctness"

Judge Paul Herbert, Franklin County Municipal Court, who delivered the keynote speech, credited research and innovative collaboration for starting a specialized program focusing on Human Trafficking victims who have been charged with the misdemeanor offense of solicitation known as CATCH (changing actions to change habits). Through his efforts, women now have a safe path to exit the dangerous lifestyle, are often reunited with their families, not committing new offenses, and furthering their educations and giving back to the community in significant ways.
