Testing and Alternatives to Classroom Credit
The Franklin University Testing Center supports the mission of the Student Learning Center, by empowering individuals to become independent life-long learners, through our testing services.
We facilitate the testing process and provide test proctoring services for all Franklin University students, and the surrounding Central Ohio community. Our policies and staff uphold the integrity of the testing process by adhering to the NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines. Our services include:
- Out-of-class and make-up testing
- Placement testing
- Proficiency testing (CLEP and FUPE)
- Proctoring Services for non-Franklin testing
Exams are proctored in a controlled environment capable of supporting both computer and paper-based tests.
Policies and Procedures
- A government-issued photo ID is required for all testing services
- You must agree to comply with the SLC testing policies as outlined at the beginning of each exam
Out-of-Class Testing is the most common service provided by the SLC
Placement exams are designed and used to determine the best fit for students as they begin Franklin Courses.
- Franklin uses ACCUPLACER tests to determine Re-Entry math and Reading and Writing placements. For more information about ACCUPLACER visit College Board.
- Your Advisor will notify you about placement exams that are required before enrollment

- It is recommend that students take time to prepare for placement tests. In order to assist with this, study guides and practice tests are provided.

Alternatives to Classroom Credit
Proficiency Exams
Students who have gained knowledge through on-the-job training, reading, and experiences may demonstrate proficiency in those areas through CLEP and FUPE exams. Grading and processing may take up to 15 business days. Therefore, students are encouraged to complete exams prior to the submission of their graduation application. Local students must register, schedule, and pay for these exams through the SLC Web site. Students living outside of the central Ohio area will visit the CLEP website (www.collegeboard.com) to locate an official CLEP testing center as these exams cannot be sent to distance proctors
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP): The nationwide CLEP program provides standardized test that award students college credit

All CLEP tests are computer-based, multiple-choice exams that are 90 minutes long*

- CLEP examinations offered at Franklin University
*The College Composition CLEP contains approximately 50 multiple-choice items to be answered in 50 minutes and two mandatory, centrally scored essays to be written in 70 minutes (for a total of 120 minutes). Shortly after each administration of the College Composition examination, college English faculty from around the country score the essays via an online scoring system. Students usually receive their scores three to four weeks after testing.
Alternatives to Classroom Credit
Proficiency Exams
Students who have gained knowledge through on-the-job training, reading, and experiences may demonstrate proficiency in those areas through CLEP and FUPE exams. Grading and processing may take up to 15 business days. Therefore, students are encouraged to complete exams prior to the submission of their graduation application. Students must register, schedule, and pay for these exams through the SLC Web site.
- Franklin University Proficiency Examination (FUPE): These exams are created by Franklin University faculty and are specific to Franklin courses
- FUPE credit may not transfer to other institutions
- FUPE exams are either paper- or computer-based
- Study guides are available on the SLC Web site
- $40 per credit hour

The Portfolio Credit Program is one way to demonstrate college level learning through a specially structured notebook containing a request for credit for a specific Franklin University course.
