Dr. Melanie Brewer is the Assistant Dean for Nursing and Chief Nursing Administrator of the School of Nursing, and Program Chair of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at Franklin University. A nurse for over 30 years and a certified family nurse practitioner for more than 20 years, she has held leadership positions in both academia and clinical practice. She earned the rank of Professor at the Arizona State University College of Nursing, responsible for Academic-Practice Partnerships and teaching in the Master’s Entry to Practice Program and the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. As Director of Research in a six-hospital healthcare system and Professor of Clinical Nursing, Dr. Brewer mentored numerous clinicians and doctoral students in conducting research and implementing evidence to improve patient outcomes. With an interprofessional team, she led the development of a Center for Evidence-Based Practice and Research in a children’s hospital, mentoring healthcare providers to develop new guidelines and standards for practice with children and their families. Dr. Brewer led the successful submission and directed a multi-million-dollar Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Graduate Nurse Education Demonstration Project to increase access to care, including four universities through academic-practice partnerships. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and a Hartford Geriatric Institute Research Scholar. Her clinical practice focuses on oncology phase I clinical trials, as well as internal medicine and movement disorders. Dr. Brewer holds a Doctor of Nursing Science from Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include improving psychosocial and physiological outcomes for patients with cancer and their families, as well as higher education research topics.
