If you think you’d thrive in a job assisting surgeons, nurses and other members of the healthcare team, a career as a surgical technologist could be a great fit for you. Complete your Surgical Technology Certificate and prepare for TS-C certification. You’ll also be eligible for 16 credits toward a healthcare-related undergraduate degree at Franklin University.

Surgical Technology Undergraduate Certificate Program Overview

Take the first step to becoming a surgical technologist with an online for-credit certificate aligned with the TS-C (Tech in Surgery Certified) through the National Center for Competency Testing. You’ll earn your certificate through 100% online courses you can complete in a year or less. An on-site field experience managed by your employer will enable you to fulfill the clinical requirements. In addition, by completing the certificate through Franklin University, you can set yourself up on a long-term career path with 16 credits toward Franklin’s associate degree in Health Services.

HEA 1012 - Introduction to Surgical Technologist I (4)

Surgical Technology is a comprehensive course with insight and focuses on the role of the Surgical Technologist. The course provides foundational knowledge required of clinical allied healthcare professionals. Emphasis is placed on preoperative and related knowledge. This course includes topics related to infection control, the use of personal protective equipment, sterile technique, decontamination and sterilization standards, and surgical instrumentation and equipment. It also addresses surgical pharmacology and aspects of medical law related to the healthcare setting.

HEA 1022 - Introduction to Surgical Technologist II (4)

Surgical Technology is a comprehensive course with insight and focuses on the role of the Surgical Technologist. The course provides foundational knowledge required of clinical allied healthcare professionals. Emphasis is placed on intraoperative and postoperative duties and related knowledge. This course includes topics related to infection control, the use of personal protective equipment, sterile technique, decontamination and sterilization standards, and surgical instrumentation and equipment. It also addresses surgical pharmacology, aspects of medical law related to the healthcare setting, support of the operative patient, and safety in the operating room.

SCIE 244 - Foundations of Anatomy & Physiology (4)

This course is designed for students interested in the allied healthcare professions. The course focuses on the fundamental concepts of anatomy and physiology that are necessary to be successful in any allied healthcare program. This course can be used to fulfill the general education science with a lab requirement, however, it is not recommended for students outside the allied health professions.

HIM 150 - Medical Terminology (2)

This course will introduce the foundations of medical terminology nomenclature and use. Emphasis will be on the fundamentals of prefix, word root, and suffix linkages to build a broad medical vocabulary.

HEA 1001 - Professionalism in Allied Health (2)

This course will provide the tools needed to demonstrate a high level of professionalism on the job. Key components of the course focus on patient interaction, proper office behavior, medical ethics, diversity and cultural bias, emotional strength, professional appearance, and communication. The course maintains a focus on the key attributes that are true markers of professionalism.
