CYSC250 - Cybersecurity for the Professions

Description:
This course is a breadth-based cybersecurity course for non-technical majors. It aims to equip a bachelor’s degree seeker with no prior cybersecurity knowledge, other than what the newspaper reports say, with essential cybersecurity knowledge. The course introduces organizational, people, and technological aspects of cybersecurity. More specifically, it covers (1) governance, standards, and risk management topics in the organizational domain, (2) security awareness, privacy, ethics and cyber threats in the people domain, and (3) cyberspace, critical sectors, and emerging topics in the technological domain.

Outcomes:

  • Summarize organizational, people, and technological contexts of cybersecurity
  • Describe the features and essential components of cyberspace
  • Prescribe fundamental governance schemes, security standards, and risk management frameworks
  • Develop a security awareness campaign by including individual and organizational aspects
  • Compare and contrast the motivations and properties of different kinds of cyber threats and their impacts on privacy
  • Debate the ethical issues and acceptable ethical behaviors around cybersecurity professions
  • Analyze the importance and applications of cybersecurity for critical sectors
  • Explain emerging and disruptive technologies that have implications for cybersecurity
