ENG130 - Research Paper

Description:
In this course, students acquire the writing competencies necessary for completing analytical and argumentative papers supported by secondary research. A variety of assignments, beginning with personal reflections, build upon one another, as students develop ideas that respond to, critique, and synthesize the positions of others. Students systematize and organize knowledge in ways that will help them in all their courses. The course also emphasizes the elements of critical reading, effective writing style, appropriate grammar and mechanics, clarity of language, and logical and cohesive development. It culminates in submission of an extended, documented research paper.

Outcomes:

  • Write structured and focused analytical and argumentative papers.
  • Choose and refine topics to fit a variety of common academic genres of writing.
  • Support an arguable thesis with a combination of reasons and evidence.
  • Read and analyze a variety of texts with a focus on evidence and support, patterns of organization, language and style, and how these rhetorical elements work together to accomplish a purpose for a specific audience.
  • Develop concise, varied sentence structures appropriate for academic and professional audiences.
  • Summarize, paraphrase, and quote appropriately the writing of other authors.
  • Incorporate sources into assignments using current APA documentation style.
  • Use concrete and abstract language effectively to present detailed information and complex ideas.
