EXS400 - Exercise for Special Populations

Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to the guidelines for exercise prescription in special populations. Topics will include exercise prescription for cardiac patients, pulmonary patients, children, elderly patients, and pregnant women. The influence of medications and medical conditions such as obesity and diabetes will also be addressed.

Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the benefits and risks of participation in exercise programs for members of special populations.
  • Understand how exercise science concepts provide insights into the nature of the disorder or condition and the application of physical activity for persons with certain conditions and diseases.
  • Appreciate the role exercise and physical activity may play in enhancing the quality of life for these persons.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the special considerations that must be addressed when prescribing physical activity for members of special populations.
  • Develop strategies to promote appropriate activity programs for members of special populations.
  • Promote critical thinking regarding the student’s competency to conduct exercise programming for members of special populations.
