Dr. Tracie Miller, Franklin University M.S. and B.S. Accounting program chair, made a guest appearance on the April Ohio Society of CPAs “The State of Business” podcast. Sharing insights developed through two decades working in the accounting industry and in teaching, Dr. Miller focused on the role universities and internships play in upskilling and reskilling accounting talent to avoid a future where accountants are “left out of solving business problems.”

High-level takeaways from the podcast include:
•    Recognizing that the business environment is constantly changing, it is important to understand how workforce development helps ensure that you have all the skills you need to be ready for the ever-changing business environment.
•    It’s risky to opt out of advancing technology, so it will be essential for the profession to understand data analytics, especially in terms of automation and visualization.
•    Accounting’s role in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and the opportunity for accountants to be involved in that conversation.
•    One of the changes brought on by the pandemic meant that it’s now possible to learn almost anywhere, meaning you don’t need to attend an in-person course or be at a certain location to grow your skills. Professionals are now able to pursue the learning they’re passionate about with more flexibility than before.
•    Tailoring learning to the needs of the student requires identifying and providing a tailored and customized learning approach.
•    Learning through mentoring to provide an authentic and engaging experience can provide a more effective path for some individuals than a more structured learning approach.
•    Lifelong learning is important. If you don't continue to learn, you're not going to advance in your career, and you're not going to be able to provide solutions to your customers and your clients. And you'll be left out.
