SEMT335 - Introduction to Emergency Management & Homeland Security

Description:
This course analyzes emergency management and homeland security from a historical perspective. Disaster planning, disaster management, and homeland security at the local, state, and federal levels in the post 9/11 era are analyzed as well. Additionally, selected Homeland Security Presidential Directives are analyzed; in addition to training in several Federal Emergency Management Agency courses leading to FEMA certification. The National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Framework (NRF) are examined with regard to their impact on local, state, and federal agencies. Finally, special challenges for emergency management and homeland security will be analyzed.

Outcomes:

  • Analyze the history and evolution of emergency management and homeland security in the United States
  • Assess emergency management & homeland security planning and response in the post 9/11 environment
  • Examine the Homeland Security Agency in terms of its purpose and scope
  • Analyze the impact of Homeland Security Presidential Directives on local, state and federal agencies
  • Analyze the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Framework (NRF) on local public safety agencies
  • Evaluate special challenges in emergency management, disaster planning and homeland security
  • Formulate methods for dealing with selected special challenges in emergency management, disaster planning and homeland security
